This elegant and secluded estate located in Santa Barbara County’s tranquil Santa Ynez Valley is about 30 minutes from Santa Barbara and two hours from Los Angeles.

 

Michael Palladino, of the acclaimed architectural firm Richard Meier & Partners, was commissioned to design a

site-specific modern house, using locally sourced materials to fit the home to its landscape.

The resulting residence, characterized by harmoniously scaled rooms suffused with natural light and wide windows positioned to frame spectacular vistas, was two years in the making.

Nestled into the foothills, with commanding views from each room, the beautifully landscaped residence is surrounded by a large olive grove and gardens with mature oak and sycamore trees. The estate also includes fully equipped equestrian facilities and a manager's house.

MAIN RESIDENCE

The main home, with dramatic views in every direction, has 5 bedrooms, 5 baths, a guest suite and 2 powder rooms. 

UPPER LEVEL 

The upper level contains the elegant living, dining, and family rooms with a ceiling created using custom-designed curved wood beams carved in a wave-like shape.  These waves crest at 14 feet in height, and terminate in motorized clerestory windows that open to the fresh air. 

LIVING ROOM 

The living room with a wood-burning fireplace opens to west side verandah and east side courtyard which also has a wood-burning fireplace.

"My favorite room is the living room. On one side of the room, the floor-to-ceiling windows capture the long views to create a wall of scenery with forms and colors not unlike a painting. You turn and the opposite wall contains smaller windows that provide an intimate look at a pocket garden in the entry courtyard. Again, differing scales to create a residence that is comfortable to live in."

DINING ROOM 

Adjacent to the formal living area is the dining room which opens to the west side verandah and affords views over the landscaped gardens and sunsets.

FAMILY ROOM 

The family room can be separated from the formal dining room via a sliding door.  With a wood-burning fireplace, it opens to an outdoor eating area with a built-in barbecue.

KITCHEN

The kitchen contains a large cooking island, a walk-in commercial grade refrigerator, a

Sub-Zero freezer and four refrigerator drawers. There is a vented grill and double oven. The space also includes a butler's pantry/prep kitchen, and an informal dining area with sliding doors to an outside deck. Adjacent to the kitchen is a laundry room and half bath.

MASTER SUITES

There are two master bedrooms on the upper level with an adjoining master bathroom including his and her commodes, and his and her walk-in closets. Additionally, there is a sitting room that is part office and part media/reading space – with a wood-burning fireplace.

LOWER LEVEL

Access to the guest rooms on the lower level is either via the stairwell adjacent to the library (on the south side) or externally from the garden area. The outside access to the guest bedrooms was conceived to provide privacy and yet unlike a guest house, no separation.

SALTWATER POOL

There is a large solar-heated saltwater pool with a shaded trellis for outdoor lounging.

LANDSCAPING

The landscaping was conceived to provide a transition from the surrounding hills to a more cultivated environment. In addition to oaks and sycamores, a large olive orchard leads up to and surrounds the house and extensive grounds in which the drought-tolerant Mediterranean and native plants give way to the refinement of roses and lawn in the gardens closest to the house.

EQUESTRIAN FACILITIES

The estate's equestrian facilities are set away from the main house and include an eight-stall center aisle barn, fully equipped with a bathing and grooming area, tack room, and a laundry room and bath. In addition, there is a large hay and equipment barn, an arena, track, paddocks, irrigated pastures and a ranch manager's home.

Son Soreno is a tour de force of Contemporary Architecture executed by award-winning architect, Michael Palladino. Mr. Palladino has been celebrated for his work on the world’s most iconic buildings: The Getty Center in Los Angeles, California; the Decorative Arts Museum in Frankfurt, Germany; and the High Museum in Atlanta, Georgia. He has designed a handful of private residences and only one in the bucolic yet sophisticated enclave of Santa Ynez.
